Celiac and Menopause

Category : nutrition

Untreated Celiac Disease

Here is the scenario.  You have not felt well for years.   You have either not gone to the doctor about it or perhaps been misdiagnosed by your physician as to the underlying cause.

Perhaps you have gas, bloating, intestinal issues, skin problems, ulcers in your mouth, swelling and/or fatigue.  The list goes on and on.

All of these symptoms can be celiac disease.

New findings were just released this month stating that women who are not treated for celiac disease are more likely to go through menopause a few years earlier.  On average women who suffered from the disease stopped getting their cycle between the ages of 47-48 years of age instead of  50-51 years of age.

Women suffering from undiagnosed celiac also suffered  more perimenopausal symptoms and a  higher risk of miscarriages.

As Tina Turbin stated from glutenfreehelp.info, 1 in every 133 people are suspected to having gluten issues.  She has a great tip sheet on her website telling what tests to request.

A new study that was just released by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center had found that daily supplementation of fish oil may in fact reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The studied followed over 35,000 women. Over time 880 developed breast cancer. Women who reported using fish oil on a daily basis were less likely to develop invasive ductal breast cancer.

As many already know fish oil has numerous benefits to the heart and brain, but this is the first study of its kind to look at fish oil and cancer risk.

The report was published Wednesday in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Action Step: This is even more reason for you to take a high quality fish oil supplement daily.

Menopause Mood Swings: Breathe Easy

Category : emotional

Are you Irritable?
Expert’s Name: Suzanne Monroe

Are you feeling stressed out these days?  Worried, anxious or preoccupied with all of the news of doom and gloom?  If so, just breathe easy.  Okay, let’s be real, most people aren’t breathing too easy these days, with all of the negative talk about the economy, politics and other world issues.  But breathing properly can actually help you reduce stress and anxiety and during perimenopause and menopause, de-stressing is vital to helping you to control some of your symptoms.

Deep breathing provides many benefits, like:  improved digestion, improved circulation, decreased stress, anxiety and depression levels, regulates the heart rate, blood pressure and the nervous system, higher energy levels, and easier weight loss. All of these benefits amount to the possibility of less symptomatic days and doesn’t that sound nice?!

Menopause Migraines: The Facts

Category : hormonal changes

Daily Headaches…what causes them?
Expert’s Name: Gail Edgell

Did you know that migraines are more than three times more likely to occur in women than in men? Women are more prone to these headaches in their pubescent years and yet again during their perimenopusal years, particularly at the onset of, or during, a menstrual cycle. These headaches are caused by fluctuations in the female hormone estrogen.

A migraine is defined as a severely painful headache that is often preceded and/or accompanied by any, or all, of the following sensory warnings -

• Flashes of Light or Blind Spots (aura)
• Tingling in the arms or legs
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Increased sensitivity to light and sound
